6 Must-Hear New Country Songs: Jelly Roll, Alexandra Kay, Denitia, Joe Nichols & More This Texas-born singer, a member of CMT’s 2024 Next Women of Country class, also spent a decade working in Brooklyn’s music scene before relocating to Nashville. Denitia’s latest is an anthem for anyone who’s overworked, underpaid and worrying about paying bills and paying dues. Packed with steel guitar, muted percussion and a plucky melody that feels reminiscent of a bygone era of country music — one of homespun, unvarnished songs aimed at connecting with the heartaches and hopes of the working class– the song is infused with Denitia’s relaxed vocal rendering, which heightens potent lyrics of work-weary escapism.

What it meant for Denitia to make it onto the Grand Ole Opry stage: ‘Looking forward to this day for so long’ Tradition looms large in country music. And artists who want to be welcomed into one of country’s many communities — from the centralized Nashville establishment to the scenes challenging its status quo — are expected to demonstrate their connection to its musical lineages, practices and institutions.
But not every artist has the luxury of simply following the old, familiar paths to acceptance and success.
Take Denitia, a Texas-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter who sings with gentle clarity, releasing her phrases with a feathery lilt, and brings fresh wisdom to nostalgic gestures.

Denitia Breaks Down Origins of “Don’t Let Me Go” There are so many people trying to make a name in Nashville, but it doesn’t take long to realize that Denitia has something special to offer. As anyone who has caught her playing at a writer’s round or as part of the CMT Next Women in Country program can confirm, the rising singer-songwriter exhibits an entrancing duality onstage. She can be grounded and vulnerable while simultaneously being confident and transportive. Like the best country music, there’s room for all of it.

ALBUM REVIEW: Denitia Navigates Change on 'Sunset Drive' Jagged earth under warped tires, the air whipping through open windows, the heart that beats along to the car stereo – all of it changes, forced to weather the seasons and evolve. In this life, change is the one constant, the only sure thing. For Denitia, it serves as the compass guiding her latest offering, Sunset Drive.

The shapeshifting singer/songwriter makes breezy songs for the open road on her second consecutive country album On 2022’s excellent Highways, Denitia Odigie made a 180 from the indie-R&B she was previously best known for and instead began embracing the country and folk music that the New York-based Houston native grew up listening to. Right down to its title, Sunset Drive comes off like a direct sequel to Highways, and it embraces a similar set of influences (including Vince Gill, Dolly Parton, Neil Young, and Kacey Musgraves). Co-written and produced by her Highways partner Brad Allen Williams (who’s also a touring and studio guitarist for Brittany Howard), it’s got some real-deal country signifiers (pedal steel, rollicking honky tonk rhythms), along with enough indie pop/rock vibes to keep the album firmly in crossover territory. Like Highways, it’s also just great, timeless songwriting. The car references in both album titles are fitting; this is music for the open road.

Denitia – “Highways” Denitia’s latest song “Highways” is an alt-country ramble — deeply tuneful, light on its feet, and shot through with melancholy. It was co-produced by Brad Allen Williams, a guitarist for artists such as Brittany Howard and Bilal. “I’ve wandered off from here to Houston, looking for a place that I can call my own,” she sings. “The city fit right for a while, like a glove lost in the melted snow.” Pedal steel and brushed drums carry the music along, creating a soft momentum to match lyrics about roaming the lonesome road.
